What Is Water Quality?
Water quality is a vague term, but generally speaking it means that:
The water is free from contaminants. You must ensure that pond water is not polluted by external agents, such as
chlorine, chloramine, fertilizers, pesticides and weedkillers.
Contaminants can be washed into the pond from adjacent ground, say, weedkiller from a lawn, or be carried in by
rainfall. Many of these and other toxic chemicals can be found in the mains supply water at levels that are safe for people
but potentially dangerous to koi. You can buy mains water purifiers with filter media to match the characteristics of the
mains supply. Using this equipment will ensure that water used to top up the pond is safe.
The water contains all the necessary trace elements, vitamins and minerals required for health, growth and
reproduction. Ironically, some of these elements may be removed by a mains supply water purifier. Check with the manufacturer
and use a montmorillionite clay based product if necessary. Many of these have essential vitamins and minerals added during
reproduction.
The water is well oxygenated. Using airpumps and venturi, as well as waterfalls in the hotter months of the year,
will all help to improve oxygen levels in the pond water. Do not let these fall below 5mg/liter.
The water is as a suitable temperature to ensure that the fishes immune and metabolic system are operating
efficiently to keep infection at bay. A heating system helps to achieve and maitain a minimum acceptable temperature.
The water is clear. Koi are happy in green (not dirty water). It helps to improve skin quality and coloration,
but if it becomes too green, you cannot see the fish and may miss signs of developing health problems. The water is adequately
buffered to prevent large swings of pH.
Mains water purifiers may be required for filling and maintaining water levels from some supplies. The filter
should be matched to a water quality report for your area.
